FALL RIDING Riding during the autumn season can be very enjoyable. Mother nature is changing the leaves to beautiful colors and the air has a tinge of coolness. It is a beautiful time to be outdoors. There are also many activities that will take place such as football games, hunting season, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Most of us will try to get in the last bit of riding before the weather gets too harsh. If we do ride in the cooler weather of autumn, there are a few things to consider. 1. Wear proper clothing for the weather. Riding a bike is no fun if you are freezing. Heavier jackets, gloves, chaps, and footwear can make the difference between an enjoyable outing and a miserable ride. So bring some extra clothing with you on the bike so that you can get comfortable if the weather 2. |

is somewhat nippy. 2. Watch out for slippery surfaces caused by fallen leaves (especially wet leaves) on curves and corners. 3. Be on the lookout for deer movement caused by the hunting season and nature (mating season) 4. Since the days are now shorter, many of us will wind up riding in low light conditions which makes it more difficult for other drivers to see us and also more difficult for us to see them. Slowing down for these conditions can give us the time we need to avoid problems. The autumn is a beautiful time of year and can be very enjoyable on a motorcycle but we have to be prepared for everything that comes with it. Wearing the proper clothes and slowing down can help us to finish out the rest of the riding year safely. Neil Pifer Rider Education Chapter Y October 2008 |
